Logan Stankoven made his highly anticipated NHL Debut this weekend in Carolina. The Dallas Stars pulled out a huge 2-1 victory of the Hurricanes to stop a four game skid during a tough road trip. However, Stankoven provided a ton of the excitement, the AHL leading scorer this season did not register a point, but he looked like an everyday NHL player that fit right in. Joey is pleading the Stars to keep in the lineup, he's a responsible defender and may be the missing piece to complete the pair of Jamie Benn and Wyatt Johnston. It also makes it easier to move off players such as Ty Dellandrea as the deadline creeps closer. We shift to the Islanders, who won the first meeting in the first game under new Head Coach Patrick Roy. Since then they have struggled and find themselves 7 points out of a playoff spot. This is an important game for Dallas since they have to get on a plane to face Colorado the next day. The Dallas Stars lose once again in Ottawa and get handed their fourth straight loss is what is becoming an awful road trip. The Stars are dealing with injuries and playing great teams, but last night was ugly. Joey releases his frustrations and points out how this was the situation the Stars could not afford. Their lack of depth defensively got them by the majority of the season, but now with injuries to Jani Hakanpaa and Nils Lundkvist they are trying to put a band aid on a much larger problem. The lone bright spot in the game was Joe Pavelski who scored his 20th goal of the season. It's his 14th season where he has reached the 20 goal mark and joins a list of Mike Modano, Patrick Kane and Keith Tkachuk who have more as U.S born players. Dallas must make a move at the deadline if they truly want to win a Stanley Cup and they need Jake Oettinger to be more consistent. It's a problem well documented and will be the end of them if it's not addressed. The Stars will try to salvage the road trip in Carolina tomorrow after defeating the Hurricanes a week ago. On today's episode of Locked On Stars, we start with ESPN's Best NHL Defensemen in 2024. For what seems like the first time in his career, Miro Heiskanen is ranked right where he should be. He's certainly not played up to the level of Cale Makar or Quinn Hughes this season, but as an all around defensemen he's one of the best. He comes in at #3 in this year's ranking behind those two and ahead of Adam Fox and Charlie Mcavoy. This is a great sign due to the fact Heiskanen is having a down year offensively. The Dallas Stars play yet another game where they outplay an opponent but end up on the wrong end of the result. The Stars fall to the Rangers by a final score of 3-1, Miro Heiskanen had the lone goal which came on the power play in the second period. Igor Shesterkin was unbelievable in net for the Rangers and held down the fort in the 3rd when the Stars outshot the Rangers 17-6. Even though they came up short, their are more positive signs then negative moving into a tough schedule to end February. Next up, we have to talk about Logan Stankoven. He was called up and we all got caught up in the hype of him making his NHL debut, but Matt Duchene was able to play which resulted in a healthy scratch and loaned back to Texas. The Dallas Stars lost in a shootout Monday afternoon, but outplayed one of the best teams in the NHL while shorthanded. The Stars were without Miro Heiskanen, Matt Duchene, Jani Hakanpaa and Nils Lundkvist against the Bruins. Joey explains, despite the loss, how the version we saw of the Stars in this game was one that can win the Stanley Cup. They played with an edge, were physical and rose to the challenge in a game they really should have no business being in. Thomas Harley stepped up and played over 29 minutes, Ryan Suter pitched in a goal and forced the Bruins to score a 6 on 5 goal late to send it to overtime. Bruins won the game in a shootout that went 9 rounds. Injuries are starting to pile up in an already thin defensive group. Derrick Pouliot and Alexander Petrovic were recalled from the Texas Stars to fill in for Heiskanen and Hakanpaa. Pouliot and Petrovic have over 200 games of experience in the NHL and played really well for just jumping into the fire. This is a time for the Stars to flex the depth they have and pick up points along the way. The final segment we take a look at the adversity the Stars are dealing with this season and how that can be used moving forward. Matt Duchene has a huge four point night in a 9-2 win for the Dallas Stars over the Nashville Predators. The Stars dominated the Preds from start to finish, outshooting the Preds 18-1 in the first period while outscoring them 4-0. Wyatt Johnston had 3 points along with Tyler Seguin and Ty Dellandrea as Dallas flexed their muscles at Bridgestone arena. Jake Oettinger picks up his 7th straight win and did not even play the 3rd period. The Stars reached 200 goals for the season in just 54 games, the fewest amount of games since 1986-87. They have solidified themselves as the team to beat in the west maybe besides the Vancouver Canucks. The Stars did have dissapointing news coming out of the game. Defensemen Nils Lundkvist left the game early in the first after taking what appeared to be an elbow to the head and did not return. He was listed with an upper body injury and did not return to the game. Joey speculates what Dallas may have to do depending on the severity of the injury. To finish the episode off we look at the Stars next opponent, the Edmonton Oilers who are coming off a loss, but playing the best hockey of anyone else in the league over the last month. On today's episode of Locked On Stars, Joey asks the question are the Dallas Stars starting to find balance in their play? Coming off one of their best wins of the season over Carolina. With Jake Oettinger playing at a high level and the defense playing at their best potential along with a steady dose of offense we have seen this season makes them a very dangerous team. Oettinger has won his last 6 starts, the Stars have a goals against average below three in their last six games and their overall goals against is improving as the weeks move on. Not only is that a great sign, but their overall team defense and physicality came to light against the Hurricanes and it was one of the few times this season you could say the Stars were not over matched physically against a great team. They now sit 3rd in the NHL and have a two point advantage leading the Central division. Dallas must go on the road to face the Nashville Predators tonight in the final game of the season series which has seen the Preds take two out of three so far. The Predators best players have struck the Stars in the three games. Ryan O'Reilly has six points in the three games, Filip Forsberg has three goals and Roman Josi has three assists. The Stars must stop their best in order to win in Nashville. Finally a segment that has treated us nicely the last few weeks, Shooting Star. The Dallas Stars get a huge win over the Carolina Hurricanes by a final score of 4-2 yesterday at home. On today's episode of Locked On Stars, Joey celebrates one of the most complete wins of the season for the Stars against one of the hottest teams in the NHL. The Stars we're really good in different facets of the game, and more importantly closed out the game in the 3rd period. Jason Robertson scored the go ahead goal and Matt Duchene sealed the win with an empty netter. Joey explains how important that game was in giving him confidence in the Stars moving forward and winning games come playoff time. Roope Hintz tallied a goal and Jani Hakanpaa chipped in with two assists. All in all a great night at the AAC. The next topic is about the recent news of Evgenii Dadonov who will be out for 4 to 6 weeks with a lower body injury he suffered against Montreal on the weekend. Not only does this give Ty Dellandrea an opportunity to play on an every day basis, but Dallas may have to make a call up from the Texas Stars. Which begs the question, do we get to see Logan Stankoven of Mavrik Bourque? Joey discusses the options the Stars have moving forward with the Dadonov injury. The final segment highlights Jake Oettinger who made 32 saves in his 3rd straight win and 6th straight win at home which ties a career high. The Dallas Stars have some of the best prospects in the American Hockey League this season in Logan Stankoven and Mavrik Bourque, but where does the entire prospect pool rank. Joey takes a look at an article from The Athletic that ranked the Stars prospect pool 21st out of 32 teams. We look at individual players including Lian Bichel, Aram Minnietian and Christian Kyrou who are three young defensemen that have abilities and characteristics that the current Stars are lacking. We highlight some of those traits and how how important it is to his on some of these prospects since you more than likely plan to move off some players like Jani Hakanpaa and Esa Lindell in the near future. The juicy part of the episode revolves around tonights game against the Carolina Hurricanes. The Canes have been on a role lately and Joey explains the similar styles the Stars and Hurricanes like to play and why it makes such a fun match up. The first period will be a crucial one for Dallas who is coming off a three game road trip. Carolina has been outscored 26-21 in the first period on the road this season. Stars need a fast start and play with a lead in front of Jake Oettinger. The return of shooting star calls for the first time this player has been chosen. The Dallas Stars Power Play is 2-for-15 since returning from the All-Star Break and now both sides of special teams are struggling. The Stars have been able to get away with their struggles in two of the three games due to great goaltending from Jake Oettinger, but it needs to fix in order to close games out. The Stars had four minutes of man advantage time late in Montreal and failed to convert while allowing two shorthanded breakaways that almost came back to bite them. Joey is hoping the Stars make changes to the top unit, such as taking Jamie Benn off the first unit, and adding Matt Duchene or Wyatt Johnston to it in hopes of unlocking some offense. The Stars power play is still around league average, but for a team that was top 5 a year ago, it's important for them to be firing on all cylinders down the stretch. Tyler Seguin, Duchene and Mason Marchment have become the new top line for the Stars. Not only have they been the most consistent and productive of all the trios. They are the one line that has not been changed throughout the season. All three are going to end up with 20 plus goals this season, and a lot of the success has to be contributed to Duchene and what he provides. Finally, Joey looks at the current standings which includes the Stars as one of four teams to have 70 points at this point in the season. They are top 5 in the NHL with a chance to expand their lead in the Central Division as the near the trade deadline. The Dallas Stars prospect Logan Stankoven is having an incredible season with the Texas Stars in the AHL this season. As a rookie, Stankoven leads the league with 51 points in 41 games this season and just competed in the All-Stars Game last weekend. Via JD Young, another Locked On NHL host, took some videos of a media scrum with Stankoven where he talked about his path to the NHL and his success in his first season in Texas. Joey listens and comments on Stankoven’s answers and how exciting it is to know the Stars have young talent awaiting in the wings. It’s not everyday you see a rookie come in and have the success he’s having, Stankoven admitted how tough it is to score, but he seems to have an understanding on how to get the job done.
